Jethro Bud Nelson Merican Lite Lager

Brewed: 06/12/2022   Kegged: 06/28/2022

The SheppyBrew Beer Master has known the SheppyBrew Beer Model since she was a sophomore at Bradley University.

As I shared in Mr. Awesome Merican Lager, she was really into her first college boyfriend, and I had to work very hard at stealing her from "Mr. Awesome".

In addition to worrying about Mr. Awesome winning her back, I had another concern .... the Beer Model's parents really did not like me.

Death threat were involved, but I won't go into that.

I lived in such fear of the in-laws-to-be that when they visited their daughter at Bradley University, I put on a disguise and snuck around campus so that if I ran into them, they would not recognize me.

Sunglasses. Farmer hat. Flannel shirt. The perfect disguise.

Just in case, I told people to call me "Jethro" so that the Beer Model's parents wouldn't recognize the "Shep" or "Sheppy" name if they overheard.

Jethro Bud Nelson.

I was able to survive the visit. Eventually, even though they still don't really approve, they eventually accepted me. Now we've been married for almost 27 years, the likelihood that the in-laws will actually follow through on their death-threats isn't real high.

In honor of my alter-ego, I created a beer that I think Jethro Bud Nelson would enjoy.

A crisp, refreshing, Merican Lite Lager is obviously something Jethro Bud Nelson would drink in quantity while slinking around trying to avoid those who would rather cause him bodily harm than let him date their daughter.

Brew day today. Up at 4. Realized part way through mash that I forgot the acid while setting up the water last night. Added it today and extended mash.

Brew day went pretty good. My Pre-boil gravity was low, so I added 5oz of sugar. Also boiled a little longer. OG 1.041, pretty much on plan. Was cleaned up before 9:30.

Fermentation was going by the afternoon the day after brew day. I forgot to switch out ice last night, and the temperature climbed to 55ish before I remembered. I decided to set the temp at 55 at that point. Now, Tilt says 1.032 at 56. Still bubbling away, but already slowing down.
06/16/2022 esheppy
Tilt says 1.012 at 55 degrees. Bubbling has slowed down, but still going a little. I unplugged the temperature controller so we'll finish up at ambient temp.
06/20/2022 esheppy
Tilt says 1.011 at 69.
06/24/2022 esheppy
Tilt still the same. 1.011 at 69. Poured a little sample. Flavor about what you'd expect. Maybe a bit more hop bitterness than the typical ALL. Very pale color. Still hazy. Will probably keg this weekend.

Kegged today. Real pale beer. Very clear already. Might not even need the gelatin. FG right at planned 1.009. Harvested some yeast for my next lager. Flavor very light and crisp. Thin as well. There is some malt and hop flavor though.
06/29/2022 esheppy
Took a little sample. Yummy. Decided there was enough of a chill haze that I'd go ahead and add the gelatin. Half a tsp in about half a cup of water. Hoping it will be pretty much carbonated by the 4th, but we'll see.
07/09/2022 esheppy
Poured a pint and compared to outlaw. This is actually significantly lighter in color and way more clear. Mine has more hop character and less malt but both are pretty close. Great beer for 100 degree day.
07/15/2022 esheppy
Took the keg to a family vacation. It was a hit. My family killed the keg.
