Brewing Notes: 04/29/2012 esheppy
Dry hopped today. 1 oz cascade and. 5 oz amarillo in 3 hop sacks.
05/01/2012 Gravity Sample esheppy
Took a gravity sample and taste test today. 1.012, which puts me at 6.8% ABV and 81% ADF. Taste was great. I think it needs some more time for the dry hops. Hopefully two days are enough since I'll want to keg on Thursday. delete
05/03/2012 Kegged esheppy
I kegged up this batch, and set the psi to about 30psi. I also filled a growler with enough table sugar to cover 2 liter bottles according to the Mr. Beer instructions. Sample tasted great. I think maybe it could have used a day or two more on the dry hops, but I need the fermenter in a couple days. It is still great.
05/03/2012 esheppy
Also had one of the old batch. Past its prime as a dry hopped ipa, but it still tastes good.
05/13/2012 esheppy
First pour from keg. Great fresh grapefruit flavor and aroma. Quite a bit of trub in pour. This will clear up soon.
06/05/2012 esheppy
Took the growler camping. Wonderful hoppy flavor and aroma. Loved drinking it at the Sand Dunes "beach".
06/09/2012 esheppy
The keg is not letting me have any more of this. I think it is gone. This makes me sad.

Brewing Notes: 02/11/2011 Ingredients esheppy
Purchased my ingredients today. It will nice to have lots of this beer ready for the 2nd half of the hockey season.
02/13/2011 Brewing Day esheppy
Brewed it. Let the mash work while at church. The temp was right at 154 when I left and up to 160 when I got back. My SG into the pot was 1.055 at about a 6.75 gallon volume, which gives me a 95% efficiency. Obviously, my mashing is not that efficient, so I must have measured something wrong. First time using my new wort chiller. It works awesome. Boiling to about 80 in 10 minutes. Got down into the low 60's after about 20 minutes. Very cool.
02/19/2011
Dry hopped into Tuke only. I got the amounts mixed up between cascade and amarillo. Oh well. Beer smells really good at this point.
02/24/2011 esheppy
Drank what I thought was the last of my previous batch, but it turns out I still have one liter left. Compared it to Mighty Arrow. I like my beer better. More of a malt-backbone and better balance. Can't wait to get the new batch bottled up and tasted. delete
02/26/2011 Bottled esheppy
Bottled up both batches. 2.25oz sugar in 1.5 cups water each. The boys actually helped this time which really made things go faster. For the dry-hopped batch got 15 12oz bottles; 2 22oz and 2 liter bottles. For the non-DH, got 13 12oz bottles; 3 22oz and 2 liter. Yum.
02/28/2011 esheppy
Had the last of the previous batch while watching the mighty Blackhawks play the evil Wild.Is anyone else still pissed that the North Stars are in Dallas?
03/05/2011 esheppy
One of my PET's was flat. I guess I forgot to properly close it, and the CO2 escaped. Probably should just be happy it has never happened before. Just added some sugar to this bottle. Got a bit of a gusher. The hop aroma was wonderful. I'll probably have to keep an eye on this bottle in case there was residual sugar in there. I'll also drink it early because I did not really sanitize the sugar.
03/13/2011 esheppy
Tried the LB which has been in the fridge since yesterday. Exactly what I want this beer to taste like. Then I tried one of the dry hopped and liked it even better. DH really seems to help the head formation and stability. I think that is not supposed to be the case, but it sure seems to be true in my experience.
03/17/2011 esheppy
Had a green dh. I like the dry hopped version better.
04/08/2011 esheppy
Am having a bomber of the DH while watching the Hawks and Wings.Hawks up 3-0 right now. Really an amazing head on this beer. Wonderful malt and hop flavors. Love this beer. Hope the Hawks can hold on and win.
06/15/2011 Let's go Bruins esheppy
While watching game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, had one (so far) in my new New Belgium globe glass. Really good head retention in this glass. Still a great beer even if I have to drink it cheering for the Bruins instead of the BlackHawks.
07/14/2011 esheppy
OMG this is a great beer.
08/14/2011 esheppy
Finished off the last non-dry-hopped bottle. So good. Sad to see it gone.
11/10/2011 esheppy
Still great hop aroma. Still love this beer. Need to brew this up again.
12/02/2011 esheppy
Still love this beer. Almost out.

Comments

03/31/2010 esheppy

Really need to brew this up if I want to have it available for the playoffs.
04/03/2010
Mixed it up. Long mash while watching a movie ... probably over 3 hours. Modified recipe on the fly due to lower than expected alpha on the Amarillo. OG ended up at 1.063. Pitched at about 70 and put right in conditioning cooler with new ice bottle.
04/06/2010
A slight fermentation overflow yesterday. I'm sort of surprised at such a "low" OG. Will probably be able to dry hop tomorrow or next day.delete
04/08/2010
Put the dry hops in my little stainless steal tea ball last night. Plopped the whole thing in.
04/20/2010 Bottled esheppy
Bottled up in 3 liter and 17 12 oz bottles. Really pleased with the attenuation. Had the sample while watching the Hawks play the preds in the playoffs. I tried a mighty arrow too and think I nailed it. Can't wait until this is carbed. Will probably drink this pretty young.
05/02/2010 esheppy
Tried the lb with a mighty arrow. Ma has more hop arroma, and is lighter in color and in much more clear. Taste is very similar, though.delete
05/05/2010 esheppy
Put a bunch in the beer fridge and the rest in the conditioning cooler. I really hope the hawks make it to the Campbell Conference finals so that I can have a bunch of these next round.
07/06/2010
Only have 4 of these left now. They did make it through the playoffs and I even had 6 after the Hawks won their first cup in 49 years. Today, I tried another. Certainly the hop flavor has faded a bit, but still tastes great.
07/11/2010 Brewing Day esheppy
Another long mash ... about 3 hours I guess. Had to adjust recipe because the Amarillo hops were much higher in AA than the last time I used these. Fermcap did its wonder on the boil. Got the yeast starting to hydrate real early in the day as well.
07/11/2010
Everything went pretty well except Some water got on the top of the brew pot while it was in the sink and Connor moved the top which got some of that water in the wort. Hopefully there are no nasty bacteria in that. We'll see how it goes.
07/14/2010
Thought things were slowing down last night, so removed the ice. Got a bit of an overflow in the morning ... but I think the krausen is going down. Temps mostly right at about 65 so far.
07/16/2010
Took out of cooler to make room for WWW last night. Dry hopped this morning.
07/24/2010 Bottled esheppy
2.25oz sugar in 1.5 cups water. Sample was really good. Very happy with attenuation. Got 17 12oz bottles and 3 liters.
08/05/2010
Put 3 into beer fridge and the rest into conditioning cooler.
08/08/2010 esheppy
Had the LB. Met with my approval. Tasted consistent with how I remember It should. Love the amarello.
10/07/2010 esheppy
Had one while watching the Hawks play the Avs on opening night. Really like the sweet malt backbone combined with the hop bitterness and flavor. Nice beer.
10/21/2010
I was just on the New Belgium site and no longer see Mighty Arrow. Has it been discontinued? Good thing I have this beer.
