Early in 2020 ... I started seeing a lot of traffic to my "Colorado 6 Pack" post on the blog, and I decided that it would be fun to take that list and homebrew batches that matched up with the list.

My first batch for this was my World-Famous Stone Soup IDA, which was inspired by the great TommyKnocker's Hop Strike Black IPA.

My second beer on the list was Odell Brewing Company's IPA, which has always been one of my favorite American IPA's.

I didn't really have an existing recipe to fit with this beer, but I was able to borrow from the AHA's Zymurgy Clone recipe to use as a starting point for my version.

So, I used lots of Horizon, Amarillo, Chinook, Simcoe, and Columbus hops along with Marris Otter and Vienna Malts.

It came out close to Odell's IPA, but not exact.

Foothills has similar hop flavor to Odell, but is more fruity and less bitter.

The color is just about a perfect match. The clarity isn't quite as brilliant, but pretty good.

Foothills malt flavor is a bit more complex and delicious with a little more of the Vienna coming through. It isn't as dry.

I'm really happy with the way these beers compare.

Delicious beer. Success.

Brewing Notes:

Placed Brew Hut order. Should be brewing this weekend.
04/24/2020 esheppy
Picked up the ingredients today. Brew day Sunday!
04/26/2020 esheppy
Brew day today. Really low og at 1.062, but that's ok.
04/27/2020 esheppy
Fermentation going pretty good. Tilt says 1.052, 61 degrees.
04/28/2020 esheppy
Blew out the airlock. Should have put in blow off tube. Luckily, not too much of a mess. Tilt says 1.020, 73 degrees.
04/29/2020 esheppy
Has really calmed down, but still bubbling away and still very cloudy. 1.017 70.
04/30/2020 esheppy
Put air lock back in. 1.015 69. Should probably dry hop soon.
05/01/2020 esheppy
Added in about half the dry hops in my dry hopping sleeve. Tilt says 1.015, 70 degrees. The yeast has not cleared up, but I think fermentation is about done. 1.015 was the estimated FG, and the tilt gravity doesn't seem to be going down.
05/03/2020 esheppy
Tilt says 1.012 today. I guess it was not done afterall. Beer isn't particularly clear either. I have a free keg, but I'll wait for now.
05/05/2020 esheppy
Made sure I had some gelatin. Tilt 1.012. 69. Hoping to keg soon.
05/07/2020 esheppy
Kegged. FG right at 1.012. Compared sample with Odell ipa. Of course Foothills was warm while Odells was cold, but they don't taste the same right now. Foothills is not as bitter and also doesn't quite match the hop flavor. The malt backbone is drier and has a biscuit flavor that I prefer. The hop presence is not quite there, but I have another round of dry hop to add. My color looks like it will be a bit lighter once it clarifies. Going to chill and then add geletin. After geletin, I'll add the last of the dry hops.
05/08/2020 esheppy
Added gelatin to beer. Shot of CO2.
05/10/2020 esheppy
Probably should have been more patient, but I've been drinking. Yummy, but needs carbonation. The gelatin has not cleared it up completely. Putting in kegerator. Adding 2nd group of dry hops in the keg.
05/15/2020 esheppy
Compared to Odell. My beer has similar hop flavor to Odell, but more fruity and less bitter. Color about the same, but not as clear (yet). My malt flavor is a bit more delicious, but not as dry. Happy with this beer.
05/16/2020 esheppy
Another comparison. Foothills clarified a lot over the past couple days. Visually almost exact. My flavor notes are still accurate.
06/05/2020 esheppy
Another side by side. Foothills is actually clearer than Odell IPA now. Color is really close, although foothills might be just a touch darker. Flavor is closer now than I remember last time I tasted them side by side. Carbonation on Odell IPA is higher, and head is bigger and longer lasting. I think the Foothills keg is close to empty.
06/05/2020 esheppy
Killed the keg.
